Document Australian Wildlife Week Learning with Our Free Learning Story Pack!
Australian Wildlife Week is celebrated during the first week of October each year, raising awareness of wildlife conservation and encouraging connections with nature. Australian Wildlife Society
It’s an opportunity to follow children’s curiosity about Australia’s native animals, discover the wildlife in your local area and explore small ways to care for the places animals call home.
A few easy ideas to explore:
- Go on a wildlife spotting walk: Explore your outdoor space and look for birds, insects or signs of visiting animals. Observe without disturbing them and record children’s questions, discoveries and drawings.
- Create animal homes through play: Offer blocks, fabric and Australian animal figures for children to create burrows, nests and other habitats. Ask, “What might this animal need to feel safe?”
- Share Australian wildlife books: Explore photographs and stories about native animals. Follow children’s interests as you investigate where animals live, what they eat and how they move.
- Move like Australian animals: Invite children to hop like a kangaroo, waddle like a wombat or stretch their wings like a cockatoo. Let children suggest animals and invent their own movements.
- Care for a little patch of nature: Involve children in caring for existing native plants or making signs to remind others to give wildlife space. Ask, “How can we help animals living here?”
