Document Indigenous Literacy Day Learning with Our Free Learning Story Pack!
Indigenous Literacy Day is held on Wednesday 2 September 2026. It is a national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ stories, cultures and languages. This year’s theme is Country Is Our Teacher. Indigenous Literacy Foundation
 
This is an opportunity to centre authentic First Nations voices and help children understand that stories, language and literacy are deeply connected to identity, family, community and Country. Choose experiences guided by genuine books, resources and local community knowledge — not tokenistic craft activities.
 
A few respectful ideas to explore:
Share First Nations-authored stories: Choose an authentic picture book by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander author and/or illustrator. Notice the author, illustrator, language and Country connections together.
Listen to Country: Take a slow outdoor walk and invite children to notice what Country might be teaching us — changing weather, plants, animals, sounds, tracks and how we can care for the environment. Record children’s ideas and questions.
Children as storytellers: Offer paper, clipboards, loose parts or photos for children to create and dictate their own stories about a place, person or experience that matters to them.
Connect with local voices: Where appropriate, invite local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, community members or Cultural Advisors to share stories, language or resources they are comfortable sharing. Never use local language words, symbols or cultural knowledge without permission.
